Lemons Increases Points Lead with Southern National Sweep

TROY, NC :: Tommy Lemons, Jr. increased his points lead at Southern National Motorsports Park by sweeping twin Late Model features on Saturday night.  Saturday was his first visit to victory lane dating back to a win in the closest race in Motor Mile Speedway history back in June.

“Before this weekend, we hadn’t raced in three weeks,” Lemons said.  “That may not seem long to others but for me and my guys it felt like an eternity.  We were ready to get back to the track and I think it showed.”

Lemons started the day on the right note, putting his car on the pole with a 15.575 second lap.  Lemons took sole possession of the lead on the opening lap of the first race and held off several challenges during a handful of restarts to score the victory.

“I was trying to save my tires but Ricky Jones and Ryan Wilson were always in my mirror,” Lemons stated.  “Those restarts didn’t help either. I just hoped we had enough left for the second race.”

A seven car invert ahead of the second race put Lemons in the seventh starting position.  Lemons methodically worked his way through the field, getting up to second before a late race caution.  Lemons chose the outside line on the final restart and rocketed to the lead and never looked back as he completed the sweep.

“Man this feels great,” Lemons exclaimed.  “The pole and two wins, we couldn’t ask for a better night… well, a full field cars would have been nice.  My crew chief Brandon works his butt on these cars and I wouldn’t here without him or these other guys.  They are at the shop almost every night of the week; this isn’t just a Saturday night operation.”

With his two victories, Lemons increased his lead to 64 in Southern National’s championship standings.  The victories mark his fifth and sixth wins of the 2014 season.

Tommy Lemons, Jr. will be back in action on Saturday, August 23rd at Southern National Motorsports Park.

Lemons Scores Victory in Closest Motor Mile Finish in History

TROY, NC :: Tommy Lemons, Jr. was declared the winner of the second Late Model race, held on Friday night, at Motor Mile Speedway.  The race, which was the closest in Motor Mile Speedway’s history, came down to a literal tie on electronic scoring.  The decision came down on Tuesday afternoon after track officials spent days reviewing photographic evidence, since electronic scoring was inconclusive, handing Lemons his fourth win of the year.

“The fans were the true winner,” Lemons said.  “It’s better to be on the winning side than the losing side.  I said that on Saturday night that it would suck for whoever came out on the losing side after a tough battle settled by three or four inches.  The fans got the win though.  The first race was a close battle.  I felt like the show me and Peyton (Sellers) put on was one of the better races that’s been at Motor Mile in a long time.”

In the closing laps, Lemons began to reel in Sellers and the two drivers began their epic battle for the lead and the win.  Sellers yielded the inside line to Lemons and was able to get along side.  In the final four laps, the two staged a classic duel, racing side-by-side, nose-to-nose all the way to the finish where the two drivers crossed the line with Lemons edging Sellers by only a couple inches.

“I won’t say it wouldn’t have been as exciting if I had been able to get to the outside,” Lemons, who is notorious for using the outside lane to his advantage just about anywhere he races, stated.  “I would’ve liked to try the outside.  I seem to run well on the outside.  The car wasn’t quite as good on the bottom on the restarts.  If we would’ve been on the outside we would’ve had a better shot at a bigger margin of victory.”

Lemons’ victory was his second Motor Mile victory of the season and his fourth overall win of the year.  Lemons did not finish the first of the two Late Model races due to alternator troubles.

Lemons will be back in action twice on Independence Day Weekend.  On July 4th, he will compete in the Rusty Harpe Memorial at Caraway Speedway.  On July 5th, he will compete in the Independence Celebration 370 at Southern National Motorsports Park.

Lemons is supported by Lemons Backhoe, Hedgecock Racing Enterprises, Kowlasky Racing Engines. For more information on Tommy Lemons, Jr. or the Lemons Motorsports team, check out their website at www.tommylemonsjr.com.

Lemons Scores First Motor Mile Victory of 2014

TROY, NC :: Tommy Lemons, Jr. scored his first victory at Motor Mile Speedway since 2012 on Saturday night.  Lemons’ victory came in the second twin Late Model race when he used the outside lane to make the pass for the win.

Lemons’ day started off with a third place qualifying effort.  He would go on to start the first of two races in third where he would go on to finish.  After the top six cars were inverted, Lemons started the second 75-lap race in the fourth position.  Lemons worked his way to the lead on the ninth lap of the race.  After a lap 23 caution, Lemons used the outside lane to again take the lead and went on to lead every lap from there on out en route to the victory, his third win of the year.

“It’s been a while since we’ve been to victory lane here,” Lemons said.  “It feels great to finally be back.  We didn’t finish where we wanted in the first race.  Third is not where I want to be so we made some adjustments after that first race.  When the car was good on the high side on the restarts, I knew we had a shot at winning it.”

Lemons’ victory came one week after inheriting the victory at Southern National Motorsports Park.  To date, Lemons has 10 top-five finishes and 13th top-10 finishes.  Lemons has wins on the season at Motor Mile Speedway and Southern National Motorsports Park.

Tommy Lemons, Jr. will be back in action at Southern National Motorsports Park for twin Late Model races on Saturday night, June 7th.

Lemons is supported by Lemons Backhoe, Hedgecock Racing Enterprises, Kowlasky Racing Engines. For more information on Tommy Lemons, Jr. or the Lemons Motorsports team, check out their website at www.tommylemonsjr.com.

Lemons Inherits Win at Southern National

LUCAMA, NC :: Tommy Lemons, Jr. scored his second win of the season on Saturday night at Southern National Motorsports Park after another car was disqualified in post-race technical inspection.  The victory breaks a winless streak dating back to March 1st.

Lemons started the 100-lap Late Model feature on the pole.  In the opening laps of the race, he surrendered the lead and dropped to second, where he would run for much of the race.  A few hours after the second place finish, the driver who crossed the stripe first was stripped of his win, allowing Lemons to inherit his second victory of the 2014 season.

“A win is a win,” Lemons said after the race.  “Obviously, I’d rather win races on the track but the way our luck’s been the past few weeks, I’ll take them any way I can get them.”

Entering the race, Lemons was sixth in the NASCAR Whelen All American Series (NWAAS) National Championship standings, fourth in the NWAAS North Carolina State Championship and third in Southern National Motorsports Park’s track championship standings.

Tommy Lemons, Jr. will be back in action on Saturday night, May 31st for twin 100-lap Late Model Stock Car races at Motor Mile Speedway just outside Radford, Virginia.

Strong Performance Overshadowed by Adversity

SOUTH BOSTON, VA :: Tommy Lemons, Jr. scored a sixth place finish in the first of two twin races at South Boston Speedway on Saturday.  The strong performance came after a fourth place start in the first race.  In the second race, Lemons was in the lead when contact with another car in the battle for the lead cut down a tire, ending Lemons’ strong run.

“The end result sucks in that second race,” Lemons said. “We cut a tire battling for the lead.  We had an awesome hot rod today.  I’ve got to thank all the guys for their hard work.  I think we’ve got a good hot rod for Ryan Preece in the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown.”

Ryan Preece will race for Lemons in the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown on Thursday, April 24th at South Boston Speedway.  Lemons was one of many cars at the race on Saturday who was shaking down a car for the DHSTS.

Lemons’ next race will be on Saturday, April 12th at Southern National Motorsports Park in North Carolina.

Stallard Overcomes Adversity for Best Career Finish

Troy, NC:  To say Craig Stallard overcame a little adversity en route to his best career Late Model Stock car finish in the 2014 season opener at Southern National Motorsports Park would be an understatement.  The 6 hour drive from his home in Jenkins, Kentucky would be enough to turn most people away, but not Stallard.  Through an offseason plagued with family illness and Mother Nature’s wrath, he managed to dig out and head south as often as possible to meet up with his Lemons Motorsports team to practice for the upcoming season.

Once opening weekend finally arrived things seemed to be looking up for Stallard as he turned impressive lap times in pre-race practice.  A strong 26 cars field lined up for the first of two 75 lap races and the green flag waved.  Stallard managed to avoid the carnage of two quick wrecks inside the first 5 laps.  Just as he seemed to be settling in, on lap 39, luck (or lack-there-of) would have its way and render Stallard’s No.42 Lemons Motorsports Chevrolet undrivable; forcing him to pit road before the halfway point of the race.

“The first race was just bad luck” Stallard said. “The second race was all JumpStart Motorsports [Lemons Motorsports Driver Development program]. The crew Lemons has put together is second to none. These guys would not give up and their hard work and dedication paid off.”

With repairs complete on Stallard’s car just minutes before the start of the second race, he would be forced to start shotgun on the field.  With each lap that passed it was clear to see Stallard was a man on a mission.  By lap 28, he had advanced from his 23rd starting position to inside the top 10. A caution come out on lap 30 and Stallard restarted in 6th.  Stallard managed to pick off a few more competitors before the next caution fell two laps later.  This time, he restarted fourth and remained inside the top 5 for what would be the longest green flag run of the day; going on to finish 6th in the race.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Stallard said after climbing out of his car following the second race. “Right now, after all we have been through, 6th place feel like a win!”  Stallard’s previous best finish of 9th came in his last race of 2013; the Thanksgiving All-Star Classic at Southern National Motorsports Park.

Stallard drives for JumpStart Motorsports Driver Development supported by Lemons Motorsports, Grafix Unlimited, Hedgecock Racing Enterprises, and Family Drug. Lemons Starts 2014 Season Stronger than Ever

TROY, NC :: With back to back podium finishes in the 2014 season opener at Southern National Motorsports Park, Tommy Lemons, Jr. made sure everyone knew he meant business this season.  Lots of drama surrounded the opening event but, as the Pulliam/McCaskill debacle unfolded, Lemons was busy collecting his 1st place trophy.  Lemons inherited the victory in the first race after another driver was disqualified following post-race inspection.

Lemons started the first of two races in fifth and quickly advanced to the fourth position before the race’s first caution. He continued to progress through the field, taking the third position on lap 40.  Following a caution, Lemons would restart on the outside lane in second position and battle side-by-side for the lead for several laps. Lemons crossed the line on lap 75 in second but would later be awarded the win.

“It’s a great start to the season for us,” Lemons said. “I’d rather win on the track instead of in the tech building but I’ll take it either way. I’ve never won the first race of the season before so I hope that’s a sign of how our season will go.”

Lemons started the second race third on the grid and moved up to second early on. He would again make a hard charge on the outside to challenge for the lead before a caution fell on lap 29. On the following restart, Lemons was relegated to third. He’d retake the second position on lap 65 but run out of time to catch the leader with just 10 laps remaining; going on to finish second in the second race.

“We just missed it a little bit,” Lemons said. “We had a really good car. It kind of sucks to come up short but it’s just tough here. You’ve got the National Champion sitting in victory lane and that’s why he’s there, because he’s pretty good. We’re not going to give up. We’re going to come back and battle hard on the 29th and see if we can’t get two victories that night.”

Lemons’ next race will be on Sunday, March 9th at Caraway Speedway.

Lemons is supported by Lemons Backhoe, Hedgecock Racing Enterprises, Kowlasky Racing Engines. For more information on Tommy Lemons, Jr. or the Lemons Motorsports team, check out their website at www.tommylemonsjr.com.

Tommy Lemons, Jr. Starts New Season at Southern National This Saturday

TROY, NC :: Tommy Lemons, Jr. and Lemons Motorsports will head to Southern National Motorsports Park, where Lemons scored three victories in 2013, on Saturday afternoon for the opening race of the 2013 Late Model Stock Car racing season.

Lemons enters 2014 with a lot of confidence after winning the crowned jewel event in Late Model racing, the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 at Martinsville Speedway, last season.  He’s anxious to get back on the track and chase a NASCAR Whelen All American Series National Championship.

“Last year was just amazing,” Lemons said.  “We had some bad luck but winning Martinsville made up for it.  We’ve been working hard on this offseason on my car and on Craig Stallard’s car.  I’m feeling really good about this season.”

Three of Lemons’ six wins in 2013 came at Southern National Motorsports Park.  Lemons hopes to add to that this year.

“We had struggled in the past at Southern National,” Lemons stated.  “We figured some things out last season.  There’s some tough competition that races there and any win at Southern National is hard fought and well deserved.  I sure hope we can add some more wins this season.”

Along with Southern National, Lemons will again compete at Motor Mile Speedway.

“I feel like there were some races we could have won and should have won at Motor Mile,” Lemons remarked.  “We had competitive cars there.  Luck just wasn’t on our side.  We had a few races where we were running top-five and just taking care of the car and biding our time and we just got caught up in some wrecks.  I feel like we should be competitive again this year.”

Along with Lemons’ car, Lemons Motorsports will also field a car for Craig Stallard at Southern National.  Stallard made his first start for Lemons Motorsports back on December 1, 2013 in the Thanksgiving All-Star Classic at Southern National Motorsports Park.  Stallard finished ninth in the race.

Saturday’s race at Southern National Motorsports Park will consist of twin 75 lap Late Model feature races with the green flag waving at 2pm EST.  Southern National Motorsports Park is located just outside of Kenly, NC near I-95 and US-301.  For more information on Southern National, visit www.snmpark.com.

Lemons is supported by Freaker USA, Lemons Backhoe, Hedgecock Racing Enterprises, Kowlasky Racing Engines, and Sellers Racing. For more information on Tommy Lemons, Jr. or the Lemons Motorsports team, check out their website at www.tommylemonsjr.com.
