Lemons Gets Season Started Off With a Win at Myrtle Beach

TROY, NC :: The IceBreaker 200 at Myrtle Beach Speedway officially kicked off the 2016 season for NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model Stock Cars and Tommy Lemons, Jr. and his Lemons Motorsports team got the season started off in the best way possible.

Lemons had a fast car all weekend as he was consistently among the fastest cars in practice and qualifying but it wasn’t until the race got underway that he asserted himself as the front runner.

“We knew we had a fast car in practice,” said Lemons following his victory. “We were near the top of the charts everytime we went on the track but we knew that conserving tires and being in the lead at the end was the best strategy to win the race.”

Lemons did exactly that when the green flag waved over the race taking the lead in the early laps but relinquishing it until a lap 74 caution and subsequent restart put him in perfect position to capitalize from the outside line.

“We got the outside there on the restart and got ahead of Justin (Johnson) there and I knew it was important to not only stay in the lead but to keep the tires under us as we still had about 50 laps to go. Once he put some pressure on me I knew we had to go and I think we went at the exact right time to not give anyone else a chance.”

For Lemons the win meant two big things; One that he had brought about some redemption from last November’s second place finish in the UNOH Battle at the Beach and two that he got his season started off with a victory giving him momentum as the season begins to roll.

“I wanted to win this one pretty bad after the race last fall,” comment Lemons. “It’s redemption for us to get this one and what a way to start this season started. To get a win to open the season is big for our team.”

Lemons will celebrate the win with his team but he’ll be turning his focus to the season opening race at Caraway Speedway soon as he looks to contend for the championship and starts out the season on Sunday, March 6th.

Lemons is supported by Lemons Backhoe, Colonial LP Gas, Hedgecock Racing Enterprises, John West Racing Engines and Robinwood Enterprises. For more information on Tommy Lemons, Jr. or the Lemons Motorsports team, check out their website at www.tommylemonsjr.com.
