Tommy Lemons Goes Two for Two with Caraway Win

On Sunday afternoon March 6th Tommy Lemons, Jr. and his Lemons Motorsports team headed to Caraway Speedway for the 51st Season Opener looking to go get his second win of the young season.

Lemons put his car in the third starting position for the 150-lap race.  This was no ordinary 150-lap Late Model Stock Car race as this event and all races at Caraway Speedway this season require a two-tire pit stops at some point in the event.  Lemons and his team were prepared for the new twist in the race but unlike many teams didn’t hire a crew of “ringers” to perform pit stops.

Lemons would keep his car in position throughout the first portion of the race running in second position until a lap 65 caution waved and almost the entire field hit pit road for their mandatory two-tire pit stop.  Lemons came in second but came off of pit road in seventh position.  Lemons said it was his fault that they lost the time on pit road and not his crew.

“Me being a rookie, I got in there too far and had to turn out and left too much wheel in the car and that messed us up,” said Lemons following the race.

Once he was back in seventh position, Lemons knew he just had to be patient but wanted to get back to the front of the field as soon as possible.  He was able to bide his time and soon enough he found himself back in second position.  He was looking for the lead and on a late race restart he was able to use the outside line to wrestle the lead away.

Lemons remained in the lead despite some late race challenges and some fender banging ensued.  Lemons was able to come away unscathed though and picked up the win.

“We had a great car,” explained Lemons.  “We knew we just needed to be patient after we had the pit stop but we were able to move back up there pretty quickly.  I knew that even if we lost a few spots that the good cars would come back to the front.”

For Lemons it was a continuation of a great start to the race season as that made for the second win in eight days.  It was also the start he was looking for as he’ll race for the championship at Caraway.

“We’re going for the championship, so there’s no better way to get this season started.  My guys have given me great cars for the last two weeks and I think we’ve found something that is really working.”

Lemons will return to Caraway Speedway looking for his third win in a row on March 26th before getting ready for the first CARS Tour Series race at Southern National Motorsports Park on April 2nd.

Lemons is supported by Lemons Backhoe, Colonial LP Gas, Hedgecock Racing Enterprises, John West Racing Engines and Robinwood Enterprises. For more information on Tommy Lemons, Jr. or the Lemons Motorsports team, check out their website at www.tommylemonsjr.com.
